Learning Objectives:

      1. Define the role of carer for the elderly and apply the skills learnt within this context
      2. Develop and apply skills in addressing the needs of the elderly person.
      3. Understand the potential effects of medication and compliance problems on elderly individuals and provide assistance in treatment appropriately and patiently;
      4. Assist other professionals in providing professional care to support older persons in a professional and conscientious manner
      5. Understand and critically reflect on the implications of the standards of care for the elderly people and make suggestions for review and improvement of the services provided.
      6. Enable older people to make choices about their care through effective interpersonal communication and consultations with them to support them live independently as much as possible
      7. Be organised in the assistance of the management of chronic conditions and co-morbidities
      8. Collaborate and liaise with other team members and across the secondary/primary care interface to ensure effective transfers of care.
      9. Promote the patients’ sense of identity and personal dignity
      10. Identify the needs of the elderly persons and carry out tasks accordingly in an efficient and effective manner
      11. Outline solidarity strategies with colleagues, patients, relatives and other people whom they meet during their work duty.
      12. Maintain professionalism, integrity and ethical behaviour throughout their work.
