Course Overview

Intro

The Learning Support Educator’s role is to prepare educational material in collaboration with the principal teacher. Furthermore, the LSE should actively participate in the class’ instructional and educational process. Therefore, this module explores how educators can best support 7-11 year old children (Primary Years) with special needs.

The Maltese education system is divided into three Modules: Early Years (Kinder to Year 2), Primary Years (Year 3 to 6) and Secondary Years (Year 7 to 11). The LSE needs to be aware of the strategies used in all three modules since the abilities and developmental levels of the children in their care vary.

All in all, this MQF Level 6 module (3 ECTS) enables participants to develop the right skill set to create personalised strategies and curate resources according to the child’s capabilities and needs.

Overall competences

During this module, our students will:

• Identify the educational needs of the children in their care.
• Learn how to develop lesson plans and instructional materials that aid children with special needs. – Primary Years

• Discuss how technology can be used to enhance the child’s learning experience. – Primary Years
• Understand the importance of ongoing assessment when it comes to students with diverse needs. – Primary Years
• Evaluate how the classroom environment can be improved to encourage this group of children to participate in class. – Primary Years
