Course Overview

Intro

This MQF Level 6 module (6 ECTS) focuses on Social Emotional Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD). SEBD is an umbrella term for individuals whose behaviour difficulties emanate from social conditions, other mental health disorders, or comorbidities.
According to Cefai & Cooper’s research (2013), 10% of SEBD students in Malta attend resource centres. The rest attend mainstream schools. Therefore, LSEs need to be aware of the various conditions that fall under this category. Furthermore, they also need to identify the best strategies that they can use to support these children in their learning process.

Overall competences

During this course, our students will:

• Identify the characteristics of learners with SEBD.
• Explore the causes and prevalence of SEBD.
• Assess the educational and behavioural levels of children with challenging behaviour.
• Learn how to create lesson plans that support students with challenging behaviour.
• Learn how to collaborate with other professionals and relatives for the child’s benefit.
• Suggest possible IEP goals for children with SEBD.
• Learn how to develop an Inclusive Behaviour Plan.
• Learn how to record and communicate a child’s progress.
• Recognise the importance of Nurture Classes and Learning Support Zones within the college system.
