Course Overview

Introduction

This programme will provide graduates meeting the entry requirements the opportunity to undertake a two-year postgraduate Master of Science degree in Nursing.

With a thorough grounding in concepts of health derived from the study of the biological and social sciences, professional studies and communication skills, students will develop the professional disciplinary knowledge and understanding of various field of practice in nursing (Medical Nursing, Surgical Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Public Health and Community Nursing, and Long-Term/ Rehabilitative Nursing, Coaching and Mentoring Staff, Management & Leadership in Nursing, Quality Assurance in Nursing). This is underpinned by the acquisition of the professional leadership and research skills you will need to practice and manage evidence-based person-centered, holistic care as a Registered Nurse.

Graduates of this MSc. in Nursing will have developed a critical understanding of a diverse and complex body of knowledge applied to and developed through nursing practice. Much of this knowledge will be contemporary and at the current boundaries of the discipline. The first year of the programme is focused on advanced nursing practice, developing the student’s ability to deliver safe and compassionate care, with a focus on undertaking in-depth assessment and clinical decision making, together with the evaluation of nursing practice.

Overall Competences

The learner will be able to: 

1. Describe comprehensively the environmental, social, socioeconomic, geographical and cultural health aspects and their influence on the causation, incidence and frequency of certain health conditions (including those requiring surgery).
2. Know how to interpret and apply research in relation to various medical and surgical conditions
3. Enhance knowledge on the different specialist professionals (doctors, nurses or other) who might need to be contacted or to whom the adult or child patient might be referred to in case of need.  
4. Know how to develop critical thinking skills to the decision-making process in gathering of information based on evidence-based practice, interpretation of facts, implementation of best practices, and evaluation of the outcomes of adult and paediatric medical and surgical nursing care provided to the client across the lifespan
5. Work within a multidisciplinary team for the benefit of the any patient
6. Know how to coordinate the care of persons/patients treated/living within acute, short-term long-term care facilities, and how to coordinate the treatment and rehabilitation process of persons of different age groups.
7. Describe comprehensively the principles and main issues of acute/short/long-term care and rehabilitation and apply the necessary skills.
8. Enhance knowledge on the services and nursing duties required to help persons living in acute/short-/long-term facilities
9. Enhance knowledge on the symptoms, causes, treatment and side-effects of the most common conditions experienced by elderly persons and ways in which they will affect the lives of the elderly persons suffering from them and their families
10. Disseminate information about research, protocols, policies and important procedures related to medicine, surgery and paediatric nursing
11. Manage a team of nurses and other healthcare professionals to conduct team meetings and discuss patient care.
12. Discern between emergency situations requiring specialised and/or immediate attention and ones that are easily controllable within a ward environment. 
13. Manage crisis situations that might occur within a medical , surgical and paediatric ward, such as a CPR or any other medical emergency  
14. Judge who are the specialists to contact in case of need or emergencies
15. Analyse critically the information gathered through evidence-based practice in order to interpret facts and implement the best practices in adult and paediatric medical and surgical nursing care
