Introduction to Literacy and Numeracy

Course Duration:  On Request

Literacy is one of the central tenets of the Maltese curriculum. Literacy skills contribute to the individual’s growth and society’s development. Becoming literate is a complex process that integrates a range of skills and contexts. While children with special needs may find it difficult to gain these skills, research shows that, with the right guidance and knowledge, they can still attain the required literacy levels.

Numeracy is another core life skill. It is the ability to be confident and competent with numbers and measures and to use the number system in different contexts. It is vital in everyday life as well as in other curriculum areas.

Educators need to make sure that the material they use takes into consideration their students' strengths and weaknesses. A comprehensive and inclusive teaching model gives children with special needs the opportunity to achieve literacy and numeracy goals.
